A new service that allows individuals and businesses to set up their own virtual phone company, including distribution of incoming and outgoing calls, has been launced by VoicePulse. A company official believes the service will create new markets for entrepreneurial individuals to develop VoIP applications for businesses and residential use.

While their pedigree as internet visionaries is secure, the founders of Kazaa have little reason to gloat about their recent foray into Voice over IP. Instead of touting Skype as the next big thing, and mouthing gratuitous criticism of those who have built the fledgling VoIP industry, Niklas Zenstrom and Janus Friis should learn a thing or two from the real trailblazers . . . and release a truly innovative program. |

Voice over IP users will soon have an easier time staying in touch while on the road. Pulver Innovations will be releasing it's long awaited WiFi-enabled SIP phone, a small cellular unit that allows a user to make and receive IP-to-IP VoIP telephone calls from an internet "hot-spot," on Sep. 22.

The recent ruling by the Minnesota state Public Utilities Commission, which declared Voice over IP provider Vonage in violation of state law by offering “telephone services . . . without first obtaining a certificate under state statutes,” is already having a ripple effect on the industry. The ruling may lead to regulations elsewhere in the country and could result in higher prices and less innovation, VoIP advocates worry. Includes sidebar describing all state actions taken so far. |
