Google caused quite a stir on March 11 with an overnight announcement about the re-branding of its Grand Central acquisition as Google Voice. The story was picked up and has been trumpeted on several continents over the past week as a revolutionary IP voice service that would give users one phone number to ring multiple telephones, one voice mailbox and sophisticated call-out features meant to rival eBay’s Skype service for cheap long distance calling.
The service was supposed to be available “in the next couple of days” to Grand Central account holders, but, as of press time Wednesday, the private beta group intended to benefit from Google’s big move into Internet telephony were still receiving a message that says: “Your account will soon be available for upgrade to Google Voice. Thank you for your patience.”
It’s not like a company of Google’s stature to release vaporware, so is there a problem with the service or has Google merely succumbed to the temptation of using hype as a marketing device?
Voxilla has calls into Google Voice Product Manager Craig Walker — we’ll let readers know what the company has to say when and if we hear back.
