Verizon Jumps Into the Femtocell Game

Verizon joins Sprint later this month with a $250 Wireless Network Extender, the first large scale commercial femtocell deployment since the pin drop network’s AIRAVE went nationwide last August.

Verizon’s box will enable CDMA through your choice of Ethernet connection and cover 5000 square feet with support for up to three simultaneous calls.

It’s not clear from currently available information how the device will be able to tell you from your neighbors (should you happen to wish installing it in something more modest than a 5000 square foot abode), but perhaps as the January 25 launch date grows closer, Verizon will explain the intricacies of its call handling protocols.
